I am an Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Writing Studies at the University of Washington Tacoma. As a scholar and teacher, everything I do revolves around ways that language is a powerful tool — not neutral or benign.
My scholarship and teaching reflect an interest in the problems generated by the dynamic nature of language, visual imagery, and technology, with a desire to understand how people negotiate identity and online communities. I am particularly interested in how people use m/e-stories to construct self-identity, connect with others, and learn about themselves. My research has been published in such journals as Visual Communication, Narrative Inquiry, and The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy.
My current research focuses on how people use social media to find connection in the digital age. Learn more about this research about online dating. If you would like to share your experiences, please email me via this contact form to schedule an interview.
